Super Herb: Gotu Kola Benefits
Let me tell you about my new favourite brew.
We found a very detailed and helpful herb guide in a hostel. One herb that struck us was Gotu Kola and we couldn’t resist ourselves. We went straight away to the herb shop and picked up some dried Gotu Kola to try it for ourselves.
The Super Duper Gotu Kola Benefits:
I’m all about it because it is said to aid intelligence and memory. If that’s not enough to drink a cup a day, other Gotu Kola benefits include treating stress, depression, increasing libido, and improving reflexes. This super duper herb is a brain tonic that is used to treat nervous disorders, epilepsy, senility, and premature aging. And the Gotu Kola benefits still don’t stop there. Gotu Kola fortifies the immune system by strengthening the adrenal glands and rejuvenating the blood through cleansing and feeding. As a pure blood tonic, it is used for skin health. It also has been shown to heal chronic venous insufficiency, scars, skin ulcers, varicose veins, wounds, blood diseases, congestive heart failure, urinary tract infections, hepatitis, high blood pressure and to promote restful sleep. Gotu Kola Benefits in Ayurvedic Medinice:
In India, Gotu Kola is considered the most spiritual of all herbs and one of the most important in Ayurvedic Medicine. Growing in the Himalayas, yogis use Gotu Kola benefits to improve meditation. They say it develops the crown chakra, by balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
Gotu Kola Benefits Studies:
The study that intrigued me, that got us to go out and find this magic herb Gotu Kola, was from Bagchi in 1989. The trial was with mentally retarded children who, once treated with Gotu Kola, scored higher on IQ tests. The table of results was astounding, these children scored almost 30% higher on the tests.
Other studies of Gotu Kola on rats have shown that the retention of learned behavior was 3 to 60 times better than in control animals.
Pharmacological studies have shown that Gotu Kola has a balanced effect in cells and tissues that contribute to the healing process, like connective tissues. Asiaticoside in Gotu Kola stimulates and strengthens skin, hair, nails and connective tissue. Long hair, long life. (Herbwisdom.com)
Pour me another!
Tip: Gotu Kola is sold as a powder or as dried herb. You can take the powder in a veggie capsule for the most potent and instant Gotu Kola benefits. Or brew and enjoy it as a hot tea.
Super Herb: Gotu Kola Benefits | Unfortunately, I had to drink my last cup in Australia before flying to Singapore, as it may be classified as Chinese Herbal Medicine and I don’t have a permit. However, I’m sure it would have been fine looking back! In the tea ball I have the Gotu Kola mixed with Siberian Ginseng (will share about Ginseng later)
