Natural Mosquito Repellent Essential Oils

Finding out which natural mosquito repellent essential oils actually work has become a necessity.

I’m in Malaysia right now and everyone is spraying DEET all over the place, I’m choking on the fumes and the mosquitos are still sucking. There has to be a better way and if I’ve learned anything, the answer is always in mother nature.

First of all, I have to rant about DEET and these chemical bug sprays.

In DEETs case, you ward off mosquitos with a harmful chemical that is a neurotoxin. What does this mean? It is killing your brain cells and absorbing straight into your body. If that’s not enough, your chemical mosquito repellent is being washed off into our water supply, the ocean, lakes and rivers.

Yesterday, amongst a cloud of DEET fog, I decided to research the whole dealio. I discovered that 75% of US water is contaminated with DEET, it burns through plastic, animals become confused around it and I can’t emphasize this enough, DEET kills your brain cells. Is warding off mosquitos worth this trade off?

Many people believe that DEET is the only thing that actually works. That’s the whole argument. I did a lot of research last night, and there are natural mosquito repellent essential oils that work just as well as and even better than harmful DEET so what’s the hold up?

What are some of these natural mosquito repellent essential oils?

  • Lemon Eucalyptus
  • Tea Tree
  • Catnip
  • Peppermint
  • Lemongrass (Citronella)
  • Eucalyptus
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Clove

Which natural mosquito repellent essential oils are the most effective?

  1. Catnip
  2. Lemon Eucalyptus
  3. Peppermint
  4. Tea Tree

Research has proven that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip, YES CATNIP, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET. (American Chemical Society, 2001 and Iowa State University Research 1999)

What do I do with the natural essential oils?

If you can get a hold of Catnip essential oil, rub a couple drops behind your ears, neck and wrists. Even better, create your own natural mosquito repellent essential oils spray by diluting it with vinegar/alcohol and purified/distilled water. Use around 15-20 drops in a small 50 ml spray bottle.

What if I can’t find any natural mosquito repellent essential oils?

…Like me in Malaysia right now. We found one place in Kuala Lumpur that sells essential oils but they are too expensive! Luckily we found a natural repellent called 21st Century Repella: Herbal Insect Repellent Moisturizing Cream. It includes 5 essential oils – Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Soybean, Eucalyptus and Coconut. It actually is working better than the DEET. The Mosquitos become more aggressive at night and we found we have to reapply a couple times a day but we are experiencing far less bites.

There’s no excuse, go green! Natural mosquito repellent essential oils work so ditch the DEET!
